Instagram Reels ads: a creative checklist

A creative checklist for Instagram Reels ads: vertical framing, safe zones for the interface, a fast hook, captions and one clear call to action.

Reels are full-screen, vertical and fast, and an ad that ignores any of those three loses before the message starts. This checklist covers the creative decisions that make a Reels ad feel native rather than repurposed: framing, the interface safe zones, the hook, captions and the call to action. For the exact current dimensions, file sizes and character limits, this article points you to Meta's own guide rather than quoting numbers that change.

Shoot and frame vertical from the start

Reels fill a vertical screen, so compose for 9:16 and put the subject in the middle of the frame. A landscape video shrunk into a vertical slot wastes most of the screen and reads as an afterthought. MakePerfectAds produces vertical 9:16 and landscape 16:9, so choose vertical for a Reels placement.

Design the whole shot vertical: the product centred, the motion top-to-bottom or gentle, and nothing important stranded at the extreme edges.

Respect the safe zones

The Reels interface sits on top of your video. The account name, caption and audio label run along the bottom, and the like, comment, share and more buttons stack on the right. Anything you place there can be covered.

Keep your key text and your call to action clear of those areas — roughly the bottom portion and the right edge. Centre the message where nothing overlaps it. Meta's Ads Guide publishes the current placement specifications and safe-area guidance; check it on the day you build the ad, because the exact margins are updated over time.

Earn the first second

Reels move fast and the next video is one flick away. Open on motion or a clear subject, not a logo or a slow fade. Name the problem or the payoff immediately, and show the product in the first moment rather than building up to it.

A strong opening for Reels usually puts the most interesting visual first and lets the context follow. If the first second could belong to any video, it is too slow. For the writing method behind the hook, see how to write a 15-second video ad script.

Caption for sound, on or off

Sound carries more on Reels than in a muted feed, but many viewers still watch without it, and captions make the ad accessible to everyone. Put your hook, your key benefit and your call to action on screen as short, high-contrast lines, placed inside the safe zone.

MakePerfectAds can add captions in many writing systems and generate a voiceover and background music in the language you choose, including mixed styles such as Hinglish. Chinese, Japanese and Korean captions are not available yet. Match the language to your actual audience.

One message, one call to action

A Reels ad has room for a single idea. Pick one offer, state it once, and end on one instruction — "Shop now", "Learn more", "Get started". Competing calls to action split attention and lower the odds that a viewer does anything at all.

Keep the destination consistent with the ad. Meta's Advertising Standards require the creative, the offer and the landing page to match; a mismatch is a common reason ads are rejected.

The pre-publish pass

Before the ad goes live, confirm the rights to every image and track, the truth of every claim, and the current platform rules. The video ad checklist before you publish covers all three in a few minutes, and the Meta ads platform page has more on planning for this placement.

These two Meta pages were checked on 2026-10-27; re-open them on your own publish date, because platform specifications and policies are updated regularly.

Frequently asked questions

What aspect ratio should an Instagram Reels ad use?

Vertical 9:16, filling the screen. Reels are a full-screen vertical placement, so a square or landscape video leaves large empty bands and looks out of place. Compose vertically from the start rather than cropping a landscape video down.

Where do I keep text so the Reels interface doesn't cover it?

Keep key text and your call to action out of the bottom area and away from the right edge, where the caption, audio label and action buttons sit. Centre the message. Meta's Ads Guide publishes the current safe-area guidance to check against.

Do Reels ads need captions if people watch with sound on?

Yes. Even where sound is common, a share of viewers watch muted, and captions make the ad accessible and easier to follow. Put the hook, the benefit and the call to action on screen as short lines inside the safe zone.
